Why children need attention, independent thought and creativity before they rely on digital shortcuts.

Parents today know that their children are growing up in a world shaped by artificial intelligence, phones, instant information and digital tools. A serious school cannot pretend that technology does not exist. Students will need to understand it. They will need to use it. They will need to live in a future where digital tools are everywhere.

But this raises a deeper question.

Before a child learns to use tools that can write, summarise, generate, calculate and complete tasks for them, have they first learned to think for themselves?

Can they read a difficult text and stay with it? Can they write a paragraph from their own mind? Can they search for the right word instead of accepting the first one given to them? Can they listen without reaching for stimulation? Can they make a mistake and correct it? Can they create something imperfectly, revise it, and feel that the work belongs to them?

At Schloss Krumbach International School, our no-phone and no-AI approach is not about rejecting the future. It is about making sure students enter the future with independence. Technology can be useful, but only when it is used by a mind that has already learned to work.

The real danger is not technology. It is dependence.

The problem with AI is not simply that it exists. The problem begins when students become dependent on it before they have developed their own intellectual strength.

AI can produce answers. It can write sentences. It can summarise information. It can make work look polished. But if it enters too early, it may remove the very struggle through which learning happens.

Ryan, a Grade 9 student at SKIS, described this danger directly when speaking about artificial intelligence and creativity:

“Your creativity levels due to artificial intelligence are depleted greatly because you don’t want to think more.”

That sentence is important because it does not treat creativity as decoration. It treats creativity as a mental habit. A student becomes creative by thinking, trying, imagining, choosing, failing, revising and trying again. If the difficult part is removed too quickly, the student may still receive an answer, but something in the student remains undeveloped.

Ryan continues:

“Your thinking skills get jammed because they’re not being put into use.”

This is one of the most serious educational arguments against early dependence on AI. A skill that is not used does not become stronger. Attention, memory, judgement, writing, analysis, imagination and expression must be practised.

If a child constantly avoids the difficulty of thinking, they may begin to lose confidence that they can think at all.

The danger is not only cheating. The deeper danger is that a child begins to ask the question Ryan formulated so clearly:

“Why do I have to learn about it when I can simply get everything I need done?”

That is the question every school must take seriously in the age of AI. If education becomes only task completion, then AI will always appear more efficient than learning. But school is not only about finishing tasks. It is about forming a person who can understand, judge, create, speak, write, think and act with independence.

No screens means more space to think

For many teenagers, the phone is not only a device. It is an escape route.
From boredom. From awkwardness. From silence. From difficult homework. From not knowing what to do next. From the discomfort of not having an immediate answer.

But learning often begins exactly in those moments. A student does not understand something. They pause. They try again. They reread. They make a note. They cross something out. They ask a question. They search for a better word. They sit with the page a little longer.

Slowly, the mind begins to work. Ryan expressed the effect of the no-screen environment very simply:

“When there are no screens, there is more space to think for yourself.”

This line captures the positive meaning of a no-phone school culture. It is not only about removing distraction. It is about returning space to the student: mental space, emotional space, creative space, social space.

At SKIS, students do not have personal phones during school life. They use school-provided laptops and digital academic resources when appropriate, but personal gadgets do not dominate their day. This gives students something rare in modern teenage life: uninterrupted time.

Without constant digital interruption, students have more room to notice what they think. They have more room to speak to each other. They have more room to read, write, practise, revise, rehearse and reflect. They have more room to become aware of their own abilities.

This matters because attention is not simply a mood. It is a skill. It has to be trained.

Attention span is not natural anymore. It has to be rebuilt.

Modern children are surrounded by speed. Fast videos. Fast music. Fast messages. Fast answers. Fast entertainment. Fast summaries. Fast escape from anything difficult.

This means that attention can no longer be taken for granted. A child may be intelligent, but still struggle to sit with a book. A teenager may be capable, but unable to listen for several minutes without feeling bored. A student may want to study, but be so used to stimulation that ordinary concentration feels almost unnatural.

Khurram, a Grade 10 student at SKIS, described how the school’s no-phone and no-AI environment changed his attention span beyond school itself:

“Students may not be so used to it at first, but really, it is rewarding. When I go home now, I realise that I have much less screen time because I have a higher concentration span and attention span than I did when I was at home and had access to constant internet and constant artificial intelligence.”

He then gives a striking example:

“Now I can go home, sit down, and read a full book in one sitting because I do not need instant gratification. I do not need to be constantly stimulated.”

This is not a small achievement. In an age when many teenagers struggle to read even short texts without interruption, the ability to sit with a full book is a sign of intellectual freedom. The student is no longer dependent on constant stimulation. He can enter a sustained experience and remain there.

Khurram connects this directly to academic life:

“It is something I struggled with when I was younger because I did not have the attention span. There were just so many distractions. It is such a fast-paced world, and we are not used to really sitting down and concentrating. But now I am. Now I realise how rewarding that process is and the fruits that it bears.”

This is the paradox of restriction. At first, no phones may feel like a limitation. But over time, students often discover that they have gained something: concentration, patience, deeper interests, and the ability to stay with difficult or beautiful things for longer.

When asked whether this restriction paradoxically gives students greater intellectual freedom and a more sustainable source of gratification, Khurram answered:

“Yes, I would say so. It makes students push their own boundaries to explore what makes them comfortable, what makes them happy, and what makes them more academically interested. It helps them find what subjects they are better at and what generally interests them.”

This is one of the strongest arguments for a no-phone learning environment. The absence of distraction does not empty the student’s life. It creates room for real interests to appear.

Fast stimulation makes patience harder

Diana, a Grade 11 student at SKIS, described the same problem from another angle: the way constant scrolling changes what students expect from attention itself.

“Nowadays, unfortunately, we are getting accustomed to just scrolling the screen and watching videos which are a maximum of two minutes. Because of that, our brain is not accustomed to something longer, and we just want to do everything as fast as possible.”

This is a crucial observation. The problem is not only that students waste time on their phones. The deeper problem is that their sense of time changes. Anything longer than a short video begins to feel too slow. Anything requiring patience feels frustrating. Anything that does not immediately entertain them becomes “boring”.

Diana continues:

“Music should be as fast as possible. The things we hear, the things we watch, the things we read, everything becomes faster. This shows that nowadays we can find less focused teenagers.”

This is why education has to protect slowness. Reading is slow. Writing is slow. Listening is slow. Thinking is slow. Learning a language is slow. Understanding a historical text is slow. Preparing an essay is slow. Becoming a serious person is slow.

A school that gives students only speed does not prepare them for depth.

Diana explains what she values about the SKIS approach:

“The thing that I really like in school is that without AI, without a phone, you do not have access to TikTok or Instagram and those apps. You are forced to do whatever you can, and if it takes time, it takes time, because there is nothing else as an alternative. I really like this. It causes me to be more patient and more focused.”

That phrase, “if it takes time, it takes time”, is at the heart of education. Some things should take time. Not because school wants to make life difficult, but because the time itself forms the student.

Patience is not a side effect of education. It is one of its outcomes.

Even listening has become a skill

One of Diana’s strongest examples comes from IB English B, where students complete a listening comprehension paper. At first, this may seem like a small academic detail. But it reveals something much larger about modern attention.

Diana explains:

“Speaking of IB, for example, in English B there is Paper 2, which is listening comprehension. As our teacher explained to us, most students lose marks because they just cannot sit for four minutes and listen to an audio file. They see it as boring, and that causes them to lose marks even though their language is good.”

This is a small example with large meaning.

A student may know the language. They may understand the words. They may be capable of answering correctly. But if they cannot sit and listen for four minutes, their ability cannot fully appear. This shows that academic success is not only about knowledge. It is also about attention. A capable student may underperform simply because their mind has not been trained to remain present.

Diana reflects on her own growth:

“At least for me now, it is really okay and comfortable to sit for at least four minutes and listen to an audio file without feeling bored. I really appreciate it.”

This may sound modest, but it is not. In a distracted age, the ability to listen without boredom is a serious academic and personal skill.

A student who can listen can learn. A student who can remain present can understand. A student who can sit with something longer than a short video has already regained part of their freedom.

Children need to discover: “Actually, I can really do this.”

One of the saddest possibilities in the age of AI is that some children may never discover their own abilities because a machine reaches the answer first.

A student may be good at writing, but never find out because AI writes the paragraph. A student may have a talent for storytelling, but never build the story alone. A student may be able to make a strong poster, interpret a text, prepare a presentation, or solve a problem, but never experience that discovery because the shortcut arrives before the effort.

Ryan makes this point clearly:

“Imagine if we had AI… some students wouldn’t understand, ‘Actually, I can really do this.”

This is one of the most important ideas for parents. Children need the experience of finding out that an ability belongs to them. They need to feel the effort and then the result. They need to know that they can write, think, speak, create and improve. If AI does the work too early, the final product may look better, but the child may grow less.

Ryan says this about student scripts written without AI:

“Maybe the script might be a bit better, but where’s the creativity in it?”

That question should sit at the centre of any discussion about AI in education. A better-looking result is not always a better educational result. A polished text may hide a student who did not think. A perfect answer may hide a child who did not understand. A clean script may hide the absence of imagination.

At SKIS, the value is not only in the final product. It is in what happens to the student while creating it.

Learning how to study is more important than appearing successful

AI can help a student produce something that looks impressive. But appearance is not the same as understanding.

This distinction matters deeply in school. A student can submit a completed answer without having truly understood the topic. They can use polished language without having built the thought behind it. They can produce a result, but remain intellectually passive.

Khurram explains that the school’s approach to study is not limited to grades:

“We are taught how to study not only to get good grades, but to deeply understand the topics we are learning.”

This sentence draws a clear line between performance and understanding. In the age of AI, that line matters more than ever. A student can produce the appearance of knowledge very quickly. Deep understanding still takes time, attention and effort.
Khurram continues:

“We learn how to study for ourselves and how to learn by ourselves.”

This is one of the most important aims of education. A strong school should not produce a student who can only function when someone tells them exactly what to do. It should produce a student who knows how to approach difficulty, organise work, revise, ask questions, analyse and continue learning independently.

In a world of instant answers, this kind of independence becomes more valuable, not less.

Reading must remain active, not superficial

AI can summarise a text. It can explain the main idea. It can produce a paragraph about a book, article or historical source. But it cannot replace the student’s own encounter with language.

Reading is not only extracting information. It is learning to follow thought. It is noticing tone, structure, evidence, contradiction, implication and meaning. It is also learning patience.

Khurram describes how students at SKIS are taught to read more deeply:

“We are taught how to analyse texts… to really interact and work with the text instead of just reading superficially.”

This is exactly the kind of skill AI can weaken if students use it too early. A summary may tell a student what a text says, but it cannot replace the work of reading closely, noticing language, questioning meaning and forming an interpretation.

To “interact and work with the text” means the student is not passive. They are not simply consuming information. They are entering into thought.

When asked why a student should bother reading a paper if AI can summarise it in seconds, Khurram answered:

“What harm does it cause you to fully read the paper from beginning to end? As young people, we should cherish the vast amount of time that we are given for our academics. We should not try to shorten that time or only live up to the fast-paced world that we live in.”

This is a rare and important answer from a teenager. He is not defending reading as a punishment. He is defending time as a gift. He recognises that students should not rush through everything simply because the world is fast.

He continues:

“We should take our time with the things that we do and make a thorough job out of everything. At the end of the day, AI is not the most efficient tool. AI was created by humans, and humans are vastly superior in their own intellectual capabilities. We can do so much better.”

Whether one agrees with every part of this statement or not, the educational instinct behind it is powerful. Khurram is defending the human mind against premature surrender. He is saying that students should not assume that a machine’s answer is automatically better than the experience of thinking, reading and understanding for themselves.

He adds:

“That is why you read intellectual papers written by people. That is why we do not have books fully written by AI. The human touch and human intervention are just so much more gratifying.”

This is exactly what education should protect: the human touch in thinking. Not only the answer, but the encounter between one mind and another.

Khurram summarises the value of knowledge in a simple sentence:

“It is always better to know than not to know.”

In the age of AI, this almost becomes a radical statement. If everything can be looked up, generated or summarised, some students may begin to ask why they should know anything themselves. But knowledge inside the student still matters. It shapes judgement. It shapes confidence. It shapes conversation. It shapes the ability to recognise whether an answer is shallow, false, incomplete or meaningful.

A student who knows nothing becomes dependent on tools.

A student who knows can use tools wisely.

Students are more than grades

One fear parents often have is that a school will reduce their child to marks, reports and exam performance. Academic achievement matters, but children need to be seen more fully than that. They need to develop confidence, language, expression, courage and self-understanding.

Diana explains this clearly:

“At SKIS, we are not judged only by our grades.”

This matters deeply in the age of AI. If education becomes only about measurable output, then students may naturally look for the fastest way to produce that output. But if education is about the whole development of the student, then the process matters: how they think, how they speak, how they improve, how they participate, how they overcome fear, how they learn to express themselves.

Diana also connects learning with real understanding:

“It is important to learn exactly what we are studying and understand what we are doing in classes.”

A completed essay is not the same as a student who can explain their argument. A finished presentation is not the same as a student who can speak with confidence. A correct answer is not the same as understanding the method.

At SKIS, students are expected to develop the abilities behind the result.

Language grows when students have to search for words

AI can produce fluent language instantly. But fluency given by a machine is not the same as language developed by a student.

For international students, this distinction is especially important. Many students at SKIS are learning in English while also developing German and other languages. They need opportunities to speak, write, present and search for the right words themselves.

Diana explains how presentations help students who are not native English speakers:

“Presentations are useful for students who are not native English speakers to overcome their anxiety and stress.”

This is not only about public speaking. It is about courage. A student who presents in another language learns to stand in discomfort and communicate anyway. They learn that imperfect speech can still be meaningful. They learn to organise ideas, face an audience, and become less afraid of being heard.

This cannot be outsourced. AI can write a script, but it cannot give the student the lived experience of overcoming anxiety.

Diana also describes essay writing in a way that shows why the process matters:

“Essay writing forces me to search for the right words and terms, find them, and write them down.”

This is exactly what students lose if AI writes too much for them. The search for words is not a waste of time. It is the work through which language becomes the student’s own.

When a student struggles to find the right word, they are not merely filling a page. They are forming thought. They are learning precision. They are building vocabulary. They are discovering how language carries meaning.

In this sense, writing is not only a product. It is a discipline of thinking.

A shortcut may work for the moment, but not for life

The strongest argument against overusing AI is not that students will always be caught. It is that one day they will need the ability that they avoided building.

Diana explains this with the example of her future ambition to study medicine:

“Yes, it is correct: we can use AI for that moment. We can do our homework or whatever we want to do, but it is only about that moment. I am sure we do not learn anything from it because someone else did it for us.”

This distinction matters. AI may solve the immediate problem. It may help the student submit the homework. It may produce the answer for that day. But education is not only about “that moment.” It is about the future person the student is becoming.

Diana continues:

“Maybe I can pass my exams in university or in school with AI, but for the future, for sure, one day, one moment, I will be trapped.”

That is the future danger of intellectual dependency. The student may pass now and fail later. They may look capable until life asks for real capability.
A school’s responsibility is not only to help students complete today’s work. It is to protect them from becoming trapped later by the skills they never built.

The no-AI approach protects the learning process

A school that restricts AI in student work is not saying that AI will never matter. It is saying that there are stages of learning that must not be skipped.
Students must first learn to read before relying on summaries. They must learn to write before asking a machine to polish their writing. They must learn to think before outsourcing arguments. They must learn to speak before hiding behind generated scripts. They must learn to create before letting AI produce the first version of imagination.

The order matters.

First, attention. Then tools. First, understanding. Then assistance. First, language. Then editing. First, imagination. Then enhancement. First, judgement. Then technology. This is why the SKIS approach is not anti-technology. It is pro-independence. It protects the stage at which students are still discovering their own mental strength.

Ryan’s words show what happens when that space is protected: students begin to realise, “Actually, I can really do this”.

Khurram’s words show what this means academically: students learn not only for grades, but for deep understanding.

Diana’s words show what this means personally: students are not judged only by grades; they learn to understand, present, write, listen, focus and search for language themselves.

Together, these reflections point to the same principle: students must be allowed to develop before they are allowed to outsource.

Learning in the age of AI must remain human

The future will belong not simply to those who can use AI, but to those who can think clearly with or without it.

A student who cannot focus will struggle even with the best tools. A student who cannot judge will be misled by polished answers. A student who cannot write will depend on borrowed language. A student who cannot sit with difficulty will avoid the very experiences that create growth.

That is why learning in the age of AI must begin with deeply human abilities: attention, memory, effort, imagination, courage, judgement, language, conversation and creativity.

A child who has learned to think can later use AI intelligently. A child who has learned to write can later edit with discernment. A child who has learned to create can later use tools without losing ownership. A child who has learned attention can enter the digital world without being completely consumed by it.

The real question is not whether children will use technology. They will.

The real question is whether they will meet technology as independent thinkers or as dependents.
